PREMIERE instant crush, "RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME"

The quest for visceral expression is a persistent pursuit. Finding the right to channel to exhibit the extents of the emotive experience is an eternal endeavor of nonstop negotiations on how to articulate constructs/connections that explicitly illustrate those places where the chaotic and abstract meets the cold sobering concrete of reality. This creative tour de force is cranked up in ultra bright displays on the debut from Seattle’s instant crush on I'M SORRY I DIDN'T BITE MY TONGUE (DELUXE). Bandleader Megan Cannon, joined by the talents of Matthew Tran, Keegan Mangahas, and Zoee Mangahas paint technicolor testaments of self-actualization with a tenacity that sounds like the radio of the 2000s thrown into a blender and then distilled into an elixir—serving as a panacea for the modern condition.
Presenting "RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME", Megan delivers a vulnerable confessional. A soul baring of the sentimental and sincere sends the audience swimming through the thought-stream tributary brooks that meet at the delta of maximalist amplified dialogues economically arranged for urgent effect. The movement of emotion, attachment and the encapsulation of all things involved with affinity move at the speed of sound in worlds that turn even faster (when it feels like you're simply standing in the same place the whole time). "RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME" is the whirlwind of where we go, where we don't go, where our loved ones go, where we want to go, what we want, what we don't want, and all the desires that oscillate between the consciousness and the core of our hearts.
I'M SORRY I DIDN'T BITE MY TONGUE makes no apologies, pulls no punches, whilst re-imagining what the turn of the millennium could have sounded like. "GRUNGE" totally goes for it in a glamorous cinematic fashion, continuing in that vein and vernacular on the aptly titled "A CINAMATIC EXIT!", to the extreme abandon of electronic apathy via "ON THE INTERNET". The instant crush team keeps the mania in motion on the midnight marathon of "CALL ME CRAZY", keeping at that whirlwind pace on "SAFETY NIGHT", sharing the misfit love song of "LONER", the midnight focused battle mode "TUG OF WAR", and the confrontational questions of carnal camaraderie of "ALL YOUR FRIENDS".
Megan and the band manage ways to convey the sublime through frequencies that convey the heart's most connective bonds on "HARD TO LOSE", the humorously jubilant romp of "APOLOGY TOUR", toasting and roasting those that are always trying to control the narrative on "REDEMPTION ARC", right before bringing down the house with "STAB MY BACK" that vanquishes petty vengeance and vindictiveness with a big stage blaring showstopper.
The group provides demos that feature different sides of the album cuts, such as the more stripped down and peppy "all your friends", where the bold and bright electronic visions can be heard taking form on "right where you left me", as "symptom of withdrawal" bops like a throwback to the early-2000s fixations and obsessions over no wave post-punk movements that manifested in the nostalgic sleaze that is often recalled across the social chains.
Megan Cannon of instant crush provided some candid thoughts on the song:
I wrote “RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME” in the same week I wrote “ALL YOUR FRIENDS”. I was feeling such intense creativity that week that is usually not something I can consistently do, and it felt like I had so much to say. Everything written during that time feels connected to the album in the way I was in the same space emotionally. I think this song was really special to me because it really did show the vulnerable side of me as opposed to just outward anger, which is usually what I gravitate towards.
This song was written as a full emotional release, and I feel the production really shows that. From the upbeat and wordy chorus that moves as quickly as my brain thinks, to the bridge that feels like a cry for help, I can’t help but be so proud to have created something that captures my inner thoughts and emotions so well.
